Today for my lunch, I decided to try and recreate a past favourite of mine: chicken wraps.
I cooked the 'No Chick Vegan Strips' for 15 minutes in the oven at 180 degrees C, as it said to do on the packet - so very easy to do.
I assembled my wrap by spreading on a layer of mild salsa, adding mixed salad leaves, some nooch and a few of the chicken strips.
The wrap overall was fine, although it was very obvious that the strips did not taste like chicken to me. I tried one of the strips on their own too, and my opinion didn't change. They sort of resemble chicken to some degree - it's as if you are eating very poorly prepared and seasoned chicken, unfortunately. I have to say, I didn't expect there to be a sort of thin batter around the 'chicken' when I bought them, but after they were cooked it was clear to see. The batter was unevenly distributed around the chicken (some areas a lot thicker than others) and when I broke one of the pieces apart in my hand, the texture of the batter to the 'chicken' almost resembled a seafood shell, in my opinion. The 'chicken' texture was sort of there, but it was so close with the batter that it was hard to get a solid section of 'chicken'.
The final verdict
I wouldn't pay £3.50 for these again, though I would eat them again. My overall opinion was that they were just alright. There weren't a perfect substitute but they'd do - you certainly wouldn't be able to fool anyone that it was actual chicken though. Because of this, they have not made it onto my UK Vegan meat swaps for carnie-cravings list.
Until next time, thank you for reading.
