Brewers Fayre Three Bean Chilli (Vegan) | Review

Updated: Jan 11, 2020

Yesterday I tried Brewers Fayre's new Three Bean Chilli for £9.59 which happens to be vegan. (see description on the right)

Other Vegan Options Across Their Menus

Brewers Fayre also offers another vegan meal, The Vegan Burger, which is around the same price as the chilli if I remember correctly. I have not tried but would love to, and I'm sure I will as Brewers Fayre is a quick and easy place for my family to get to when we don't fancy cooking or don't really have anything in the cupboards. The only vegan pudding that they offer is the Apple Pie and custard, however I've never liked apple pie so I wouldn't order this. It would be great to see some more options for the pudding menu as this restaurant chain is all across the UK. To my surprise, there wasn't even a solely vegetarian main on their children's menu, let alone any vegan mains! There is an option to swap out sausages for veggie ones and for you to take out the meatballs in pasta, however I think that all kids menus should offer somewhat exciting and exclusively vegetarian (and vegan of course) meals, as the parents may feel like their kids are getting less because they have to remove aspects of the meal (and most likely pay the full amount regardless). On their daytime value menu, I think the only vegan option on there could be the tomato soup, however it is not labelled vegan, only vegetarian. As for the breakfasts, I'm not sure if they offer plant milks to go along with their cereals but I'm sure that I will find out eventually when my family and I visit for breakfast one day.

I am glad that Brewers Fayre have a main other than a burger for vegans on their main menu, but I think they do need to expand their range across all of their menus.

The Meal

So I ordered this chilli with a side of sweet potato fries because I wasn't sure if the meal would fill me up since I knew I wasn't going to be eating their only vegan pudding (Apple Pie and Custard).

The chilli itself was lovely. I would not say that it is 'medium spiced' though, as it tasted mild to me, but the flavours were varied and delicious. The few tortilla chips that came with it were nice, and the chilli mixed with the rice was delicious.

If I were to improve this Three Bean Chilli in any way, I would do two things.

1. I would add more to the portion size.

2. I would either change the 'medium spice' description to 'mild', or make the dish spicier - I'd not mind either way.

Final Verdict

I will definitely be having this again, though I do think that it is a good idea to get a side of something with this, as the portion isn't really big enough if you're not planning on having dessert. This was a reasonably priced meal which is a perfect comfort food, and a good vegan option that isn't a burger. I really hope Brewers Fayre expand their vegan menu, as it is such a lovely and easy family restaurant.

*Please note that since writing this, Brewers Fayre have changed their menu including the vegan options mentioned here. Please see my newer post for a review of the new menu options.

Until next time, thank you for reading.
